What is a Fire Fighting Panel?

At SS Controls India, we offer robust, code-compliant, and intelligent Fire Fighting Panels designed to automatically control and operate fire pump systems in emergency situations. Our panels are built with high-performance components to ensure uninterrupted protection in commercial, residential, and industrial buildings.

A Fire Fighting Panel, also known as a Fire Pump Control Panel, is an essential part of any fire protection system. It controls the operation of fire pumps—Jockey Pump, Main Pump (Diesel or Electric), and Standby Pumps—based on pressure signals and system demand. It ensures water is delivered at the correct pressure during a fire emergency.

Technical Specifications

General System & Scope

  • Equipment: Fire Fighting Pump Control Panel (Electric, Diesel, and Jockey Pump controllers).
  • Standard Compliance: Designed strictly in accordance with NFPA 20 (Standard for Stationary Pumps for Fire Protection) and local fire authority norms.
  • Application: Commercial buildings, industrial facilities, and high-rise applications.
  • Operation Mode: Fully Automatic / Semi-Automatic / Manual.

Enclosure & Construction

  • Material: 2 mm thick CRCA (Cold Rolled Close Annealed) sheet steel.
  • Protection Class: Minimum IP54 (Indoor) or IP65 (Outdoor/Basement) to protect against dust and water ingress.
  • Paint Shade: Fire Red (RAL 3000) epoxy powder coated.
  • Door Interlock: Padlockable door handles with mechanical and electrical interlocks.
  • Cable Entry: Bottom/Top gland plate with heavy-duty brass cable glands.

Electrical Characteristics

  • System Voltage: 415V ± 10%, 3-Phase, 4-Wire, 50Hz.
  • Control Supply: 230VAC or 24VDC (for safety and battery/controller backup).
  • Busbar Material: High-conductivity electrolytic Grade Copper.
  • Short Circuit Withstand: Not less than 35kA or 50kA for 1 second.
  • Earthing: Continuous copper earth busbar running the entire length of the panel.

Control Logic & Components

The panel operates three primary pumps based on a cascading pressure drop:

  • Jockey Pump Starter: Direct-On-Line (DOL) or Star-Delta. Automatically starts and stops to maintain standard line pressure.
  • Main Electric Pump Starter: Star-Delta, Auto-Transformer, or Soft Starter. Starts automatically upon severe pressure drop; stops manually.
  • Diesel Engine Pump Controller: Houses a microprocessor/PLC and a 12V/24VDC battery bank for engine cranking. It handles automatic periodic testing and sequential cranking.
  • Pressure Switches: Heavy-duty external pressure transducers or switches for Auto-Start logic.

Indications & Metering

  • Digital Metering: Multifunction Meter (MFM) to display Phase Voltage, Current, Frequency, and Power.
  • Indicating Lamps (LED Type): Power On / Phase Healthy / Phase Reversal, Pump Running / Pump Trip / Overload, Standby Pump Active / Engine Fail to Start

Safety & Protection Features

  • Overload, short-circuit, and single-phasing protection for electric motors.
  • Emergency Stop pushbuttons for each pump.
  • Battery charger malfunction and low voltage alarm for the diesel controller.
  • Interlock to prevent the diesel engine and electric motor from starting simultaneously.
